What to Expect Heading into 2019: Canada’s Cannabis Legalization as there are more updates on edibles, vapes and Provincial dispensaries. 

 

One for he more unfortunate trends since cannabis legalization in Canada is the recalls on flower products from Licensed Producers. (LPs)

In our last update, we mentioned some products were recalled for finding mold in packaged products, those in Ontario can return it to the OCS and call the product’s customer service line.

What has come down from the Health Canada are the proposed regulations for edibles and vapes for October 2019. And those LPs getting into those product lines have taken the regulations and run with it.

The industry is just getting more sophisticated, as we see by conferences as Lift&Co Expo, recently being held in Vancouver, British Columbia. With cultivating, marketing and innovation panels, the later led by Renee Gagnon, CEO Hollyweed North that are dripping in knowledge and hopeful of what the future of cannabis in Canada looks like.

What does edibles future look like?

It follows similar guidelines that set forth in The Cannabis Act that us as marketers and really anyone who’s developing products in the industry should know.

 

There are limits on the amount of THC per unit, per package with specific requirements for packaging and labeling that follow suit with flower packaging.

 

What is prohibited?

 

With limits there are restrictions in health and dietary claims. No gummy bears, as it appeals to youth as its a priority for Canada to keep it out of the hand of children.

 

Any cannabis mixed with caffeine is limited while combined with alcohol or brand alcohol is banned.

They’re saying it could be three years until there’s enough licensed growers for the legal market to work! Patients can’t wait that long.

Jodie feels they’re getting pushed out, as she mentions in the Toronto Sun interview: 

It starts to feel as if it’s all by design. People say the government is making mistakes, but I don’t think so,” she adds. “It’s more like they’re making sure the cannabis criminalization business — police, politicians and everyone involved in cracking down on cannabis — get more money, more laws, more power to go after people. It continues to reward and benefit the prohibitionists and the criminalization regime. And it continues to reward the big business operations who are friends with the government.

And it continues to punish the activist and the prohibition victims and everyone else who thought they’d have some liberation under legalization.

While in Ontario with just 25 licensees granted through a lottery meant that anyone with $75 could apply. And that’s just what happened with for close to 60,000 applicants to put their hat into the ring to find out if they were one of the chosen 25 hopefuls.

Abi Roach owner of Hotbox Lounge put her hat in the ring but did not win. Her concern is what it means for those receiving licenses who may not understand the cannabis industry or culture – or not run retail shop. She’s spoken to a few of the lottery winners and felt it there will be potential partnerships with offers rolling in at $5 million.

We’re sure they are receiving calls from the likes of Fire and Flower and Tokyo Smoke who have the retail shops in Yorkville but no licenses.
